Today is a historic day. After years of deliberations at the highest court in our land Roe v. Wade has been overturned. Since Roe v. Wade came into effect about 64 million babies have been killed in the womb. This turn of events (or should I say “overturn of events), is a tremendous win for life!
To be clear, the Supreme Court’s decision does not end the practice of abortion in our country. It simply gives the power of decision about the issue back to the voters of each respective state in the nation. Here’s an article I wrote about the matter so you can better understand it:
This decision by the SCOTUS was argued in a well-written and thoughtful way. The written argument can be found here: https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/22067246/dobbs-decision.pdf
Political Fallout
This afternoon President Joe Biden took to the airwaves to explain his disdain and sadness over this very important decision. Keep in mind, for most Roe v. Wade is merely a political issue. For Christians Roe v Wade is about the blatant violation of the imago Dei (image of God).
President Biden’s Speech is replete with false claims about the issue of abortion. However, his official remarks reveal the true motives behind support for abortion on the political and cultural stage. Here’s a link to his full remarks delivered today at 12:37pm EST: https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/speeches-remarks/2022/06/24/remarks-by-president-biden-on-the-supreme-court-decision-to-overturn-roe-v-wade/.
President Biden stated that today is “a sad day for the Court and for the country.” I disagree.
His official remarks are worth your time and examination, because it reveals much of what the debate in our culture and political sphere is about. Here are a few remarks made by POTUS that heed consideration:
- Remark #1 – “Fifty years ago, Roe v. Wade was decided and has been the law of the land since then” – The language of Roe v. Wade as being “the law of the land” is misleading because according to legal scholar John Hart Ely, Roe “is not constitutional law and gives almost no sense of an obligation to try to be.”
- Remark #2 – “This landmark case protected a woman’s right to choose” – The Constitution of the United States does not secure the right for anyone to have an abortion. More on this here.
- Remark #3 – “…[Roe v Wade] reinforced the fundamental right of privacy — the right of each of us to choose how to live our lives” – Yes, we have the right of privacy, but we do not have the right to kill a child in the womb. The statement in relation to our right to “choose how to live our lives” is straight out of a post-modern framework that views all things as relative, completely taking God out of the equation. Consequently, it turns us into “gods,” who believe we have the right to terminate life int he womb at our own whim.
- Remark #4 – “Now, with Roe gone, let’s be very clear: The health and life of women in this nation are now at risk” – this is simply not true. No one is forcing women not to get abortions. In fact, several states still allow women to get abortions. Effectively, this law simply makes it harder for women who live in states where access to abortion will be restricted to perform the act of terminating their child.
- Remark #5 – “A decision with broad national consensus that most Americans of faiths and backgrounds found acceptable and that had been the law of the land for most of the lifetime of Americans today.” This is simply not true. There is no definitive answer on whether or not the vast majority of Americans support Roe. It really comes down to which poll you look at, how the question was presented to the people polled, and the proper statistics on the matter across the nation: https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/verify/verify-do-70-americans-support-roe-v-wade/65-5c24a2d7-3f9b-4b3f-ab49-e15e590ee62c. Also keep in mind that most people of faith absolutely do not support the killing of the unborn.
- Remark #6 – “It was three justices named by one President — Donald Trump — who were the core of today’s decision to upend the scales of justice and eliminate a fundamental right for women in this country.” Elections indeed have consequences. President Trump indeed played a significant role in the balance of power in the Supreme Court. His appointments proved to be a win for life.
- Remark #7 – “Make no mistake: This decision is the culmination of a deliberate effort over decades to upset the balance of our law. It’s a realization of an extreme ideology and a tragic error by the Supreme Court, in my view.” The balance of our law has not been upset. In other words, it has not been changed for worse, which is what is implied by POTUS’ statement. IT simply shifted, but not in his favor, or in the favor of those who oppose the right to life. Interesting enough, POTUS claims that this decision is the “realization of an extreme ideology.” His comment places all who oppose abortion into the “extreme camp.” Further, president Joe Biden has pitted the American people against the SCOTUS.
- Remark #8 – “The Court has done what it has never done before: expressly take away a constitutional right that is so fundamental to so many Americans that had already been recognized.” As mentioned above, nobody has the right to an abortion. No one has the “right” to terminate their pregnancy under the Constitution. Furthermore, Biden, who claims to be a Christian, believes people have the right to terminate their unborn babies, which is a completely unbiblical idea.
- Remark #9 – “The Court’s decision to do so will have real and immediate consequences. State laws banning abortion are automatically taking effect today, jeopardizing the health of millions of women.” Yes, the Court’s decision does have real and immediate consequences, thank goodness! More lives will be saved today and in subsequent days. The president also failed to clarify how the health of millions of women will be jeopardized. How about the health of millions of future women, who would be born if abortion was fully legalized across the board.
- Remark #10 – “So extreme that women could be punished for protecting their health.” In his speech POTUS mentions the word “extreme” multiple times. But is it not an extreme measure to kill babies in the womb up to the point of abortion, which he fully supports? What about protecting the health of the baby?
- Remark #11 – “No executive action from the President can do that. And if Congress, as it appears, lacks the vote — votes to do that now, voters need to make their voices heard.” This statement and subsequent ones, such as “We need to restore the protections of Roe as law of the land. We need to elect officials who will do that,” reveal the real motive for his address. This is not about protecting women’s rights…it is about votes! His next statement makes it crystal clear… “This fall, Roe is on the ballot.” Christians should be aware of how they vote, because elections do have consequences. Here’s an article on how you can approach your right to vote responsibly: https://pastordanielmessina.com/how-christians-should-vote-in-2020/.
- Remark #12 – “As the Attorney General has made clear, women must remain free to travel safely to another state to seek the care they need. And my administration will defend that bedrock right.” Nobody in America is forbidden from traveling across states. This is simply fear tactics.
- Remark #13 – “First, I call on everyone, no matter how deeply they care about this decision, to keep all protests peaceful.” I am thankful to the President for encouraging others to peacefully protest. That’s what should happen in our country when we disagree. Violence in the streets is not the answer.
- Remark #14 – “Second, I know so many of us are frustrated and disillusioned that the Court has taken something away that’s so fundamental.” Once again, the Court did not do away with abortion. It simply gave the decisional power back to the states. The fight to end abortion will continue.
Today is not a sad day in America, in my opinion. Today is a day of rejoicing!
Furthermore, we must hold things in balance. We must continue to pray for our nation, its leaders, and those who hurt.
In the words of Dr. Danny Akin…
Let us praise the Lord today for the wisdom that he granted the U.S. Supreme Court. Let us continue to pray for our state legislators around the country to make the right decision to preserve life. Let us continue to pray for and support our pregnancy centers around the nation as their work continues to be vital in the effort to persuade mothers and fathers to not take the path of abortion. Also, pray for those that have been through an abortion. I am thankful that in Christ there is both forgiveness and hope.
“This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24
