In the past couple of weeks the Senate Judiciary Committee probed Amy Coney Barrett on a number of issues related to her SCOTUS nomination. Barrett, a self-proclaimed originalist, is also known for being a devout Catholic. Her conservative views would reshape the future of the Supreme Court for decades to come giving conservatives a 6–3 majority in the court.
Though an excellent judge, with a stellar career, she has been mostly criticized because of her Christian faith. In fact, in 2017 during a hearing for her current role as a judge Senator Feinstein of California told her, “The dogma lives loudly within you.” I wrote about it in another blog article (read here). Her conservative views have liberals and progressives worried she might use her newfound SCOTUS power to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Among those worried is American comedian, political commentator, and television host Bill Maher. In one of his recent Friday night shows Maher said, “She’s like the Terminator, a robot programmed to fulfill one task except she wasn’t sent from the future, she was sent from the past.” Meaning? Progressives think the that those who do not support on-demand abortion are outdated and on the wrong side of history. Interesting, coming from a guy who has never been married and does not have children.
In his show, Maher also attacked other SCOTUS justices for their Catholic faith. Maher, who considers himself an atheist, complained there are no atheists on the Supreme court. He proceeded to say, “It’s not wrong to call out nuts when [expletive] is nuts! Chuck Schumer said Democrats won’t make Barrett’s religion an issue,” he concluded, “but they should because being nuts is relevant.” Never mind the fact that Schumer adheres to the Jewish religion, which is extremely close to Christianity. So Maher, must think Schumer too is nuts.
Is Bill Maher Right to Call Christians “Nuts”?
Well, in a sense Bill Maher is right. Christians have been called nuts and are considered “crazy” by many for their beliefs. In fact, Dc Talk, a Christian Band that started in the 90s produced a Christian hit titled “Jesus Freak.” The main chorus says,
“What will people think
When they hear that I’m a Jesus Freak?
What will people do
When they find that’s it’s true?”
Why the title “freak”? For several reasons:
- Jesus Christ is God (John 1:1, 14, 10:30-33, 20:28; Colossians 2:9; Philippians 2:5-8; Hebrews 1:8).
- Jesus was born of a virgin (Matthew 1:18; Luke 1:26–35).
- Jesus Christ became a man (Philippians 2:1-11).
- Jesus is fully God and fully man (Colossians 2:9; 1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 4:15; 2 Corinthians 5:21).
- Jesus Christ is perfect and sinless (1 Peter 2:22; Hebrews 4:15).
- Jesus is the only way to God the Father (John 14:6; Matthew 11:27; Luke 10:22).
Furthermore, we believe:
- Humans were created by God and in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27).
- All people have sinned (Romans 3:23, 5:12).
- Death came into the world through Adam’s sin (Romans 5:12-15).
- Sin separates us from God (Isaiah 59:2).
- Those who reject Jesus Christ will go to hell forever after they die (Revelation 20:11-15, 21:8).
- Those who accept Jesus Christ will live for eternity with him after they die (John 11:25, 26; 2 Corinthians 5:6).
Furthermore, we believe in decency. We believe that marriage should be between one man and one woman. We believe that husbands should love their wives and serve them and that women should submit to their authority in Christ (Ephesians 5:21–33; Colossians 3:19). We believe children should respect their parents (Ephesians 6:1; Colossians 3:20). We believe fathers should set an example of godliness to their children (Ephesians 6:2; Colossians 3:21). And we believe the Bible is the authoritative Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21)
But I guess that is “nuts” to the world. At least it is to Bill Maher. But one thing is for sure … Christians think that those who reject God’s free offer of salvation and the love of God through Christ Jesus are nuts!
Though as an evangelical I disagree with a big chunk of Catholic dogma and beliefs, I do affirm the virgin birth, Christ’s supremacy, the Trinity, and other primary Christian doctrines. Though some might think I’m nuts for believing such things, I welcome the title if it means I’m on the right side of history and belief … which I am fully convinced I am!
I pray one day Maher, and others may know the beauty of the gospel and experience the power of Christ’s redemption, love, and the freedom he offers!
